“It’s a new year, new me.” That’s how the saying goes, right? As 2017 begins, we make a vow to leave behind a mixture of things like – selected relationships, bad habits, old clothing trends, etc. It is also common to leave behind fads (or trends) of the previous year.
Many of 2016’s most popular fads included health and fitness ones. Diet trends, gimmicky food, wonky exercises, the list goes on! Some of these fads were simple, while others were more complex. However, like most fads, they come and go very briefly.
Some fads are simply a huge waste of time and don’t even provide actual benefits. To put it simply, if you want a better year in 2017, you should leave some of these trends behind.
Here’s a list of some health and fitness fads we think you should leave behind in 2016:
1. Detox Cleanses
There has been a huge increase in the number of people doing detox cleanses. Detox cleanses include drinking juice – and only juice for nutrients. No one really needs to detox, and here’s why!
According to Business Insider, our livers and kidneys already do most of the work for us, because it’s their job! Our kidneys were made to filter our blood and waste, while our liver processes medications and works to detoxify our body.
Many people also believe that they can cleanse the body by maintaining a juice-only diet, which is completely false. Our body needs the essential nutrients of whole fruits and vegetables, which is why this fad is better off being left in 2016.
2. The Baby Food Diet
This diet fad became fairly popular in 2016, since many people believed that eating baby food would lead to weight loss. This diet involved replacing daily meals with cans of baby food. That’s right, baby food.
Celebrities and fitness gurus have recently been promoting this diet for weight loss. They claim that there are many benefits from less calories and can provide all of the nutrients that regular food does. Although this baby food diet does indeed help weight loss, it can also be extremely harmful to your body.
Baby food does not contain all of the protein, fiber, and full nutritional value that adults need. It is also very limited in the number of calories, which could lead to many eating disorders. This could lead to nutritional imbalances within the body and could lead to many potential illnesses.
3. Bee Pollen
Bee Pollen is the substance that bees take from flowers to create honey. In recent trends, people have been promoting bee pollen as healthy and beneficial to consume; however, this is not enough scientific data to support this argument.
Many people have been putting bee pollen in their foods, claiming that it is a “superfood” with many nutritional benefits. They also believe that bee pollen can be used as a substitute for fruits and vegetables. However, this is absolutely not true. In fact, it can even cause serious allergic reactions and side effects.
Bee pollen is not a proper replacement for fruits and vegetables, so you’re better off saving your money from this trend in the New Year.
Health and fitness is everywhere, but it’s up to you to decide which ones work best for you. Take it from us, you don’t need detox cleanses, baby food, or bee pollen in your life. Try to stick with the daily food pyramid and proper exercise. It’ll be more beneficial in the long run.
